Small ICBM Hard Mobile Launcher (HML)

This prototype of the Hard Mobile Launcher (HML), a mobile, radiation-hardened, vehicle designed to carry and launch a Small Intercontinental Ballistic Missile commonly known as the "Midgetman. It was designed to travel up to 70 mph on paved roads, and perform in serious off road conditions. The trailer's trailing arm suspension allows it to be dropped several feet to dig itself into the ground for additional protection from supersonic winds associated with a nuclear blast. This unit weighs over 200,000 lbs. It was designed and built by Boeing and Loral (formerly Goodyear Aerospace. I (Bill) was for a year a member of a small team of designers who developed an HML prototype in Phoenix and Seattle in the mid 1980s.
