North American F-82B Twin Mustang

The F-82 was the last significant propeller-driven fighter used by the Air Force. It was designed to reduce pilot fatigue on long-range ecsort missions. WW II ended before they were ready for service. Radar-equipped F-82s were later used extensively by the Air Defense Command. Japan-based F-82s were among the first USAF aircraft to operate over Korea during the Korean War, resulting in the first air kills on June 27, 1950. Betty-Jo,shown here, flew from Hawaii to New York on February 27-28, 1947, a distance of 5,051 miles, the longest non-stop flight ever made by a prop-driven fighter.
