MXY7 Ohka Kamikaze Rocket

Japanese Kamikaze (the Divine Wind) aircraft, their noses laden with high explosive were flown into US ships by their suicidal pilots. Over 5,000 Kamikaze pilots died in WW2. The MXY7 Ohka (Cherry Blossom) shown here is a small, rocket-powered aircraft intended to be carried to the target area by a Mitsubishi G4M2e (Betty) bomber. The Ohka had only limited success, as their mother aircraft were easy targets for American fighter pilots. About 850 Ohkas were built before being replaced by a faster model. Only 50 ever saw combat, sinking three enemy ships.
